I grew up in a single parent household with my mom and older brother. At the same time, I was also loved and raised by my father. But my great grandmother had the greatest influence on me as a child. Despite not being able to read or write, she would always talk about how good God was to her. She taught me the importance of going to God in prayer, during both the best and the worst of times. But on Christmas Eve 1995, she died, and I realized how good God was for sending me someone so special.

I played football throughout high school, signing a scholarship to attend LSU during my senior year. However, academically I didn’t qualify. So for two years, I sat out of college and lived in a one-bedroom apartment taking correspondence courses to improve my grades. It was during this time that God showed me a hard side of life. Living in the slums of Baton Rouge, sometimes eating only once a day to save money for bus fare to work, I believe God used those challenges to strengthen my faith in Him.

As a young man, I played football to be seen by men, but now I play to honor God for He has blessed me mentally, physically and spiritually. I believe God brought me through my struggles not only to teach me to put my trust in Him alone, but also to use me as a vessel—an example—to help others see God and grow in their faith in Him.
