Forward :: USA Men's Soccer

Every kid who loves soccer dreams of playing for his country’s national team. Even better would be to score a goal for his country in the World Cup. I had the privilege of doing both of these things at the 1998 World Cup in France and the 2002 World Cup in Korea. In France, during a game against Iran, I headed a ball into the net and experienced the thrill of a lifetime. In Korea, I was blessed to score two goals, helping the USA defeat Portugal. The joy I felt during those moments is indescribable. And yet, those feelings pale in comparison to how I feel about Christ.

I am very grateful to have played professionally in the USA and England. It’s been exciting, but it hasn’t always been easy. My amazing wife and two great children have been a huge support. Even more important is my relationship with Jesus. My career has been checkered with a lot of injuries and other challenges. When I encounter such disappointments, it helps to remember that Jesus Christ faced even greater obstacles. Yet, He did not quit. He went all the way to death on the cross…for you, and for me. With God’s help, we don’t have to let the tough times drag us down. Like Jesus, we can actually regard adversity not as a setback but as an opportunity.
